ROLE TITLE: MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER – ELECTRIC DRIVE UNIT
REPORTING LINE: The Mechanical Design Engineer will report directly to the Head of Propulsion & Mechanical Systems, subject to change as the team grows over the next 12 months.
DEPARTMENTAL OVERVIEW:
The Propulsion & Mechanical Systems department sits within the Technical Team and is responsible for delivering all mechanical design, engineering, and integration activities for our eFoiler® Propulsion and primary mechanical systems. The department is critical for the delivery and performance of all Artemis Technologies vessels and is rapidly expanding its footprint within the company.
THE ROLE:
We are recruiting a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the conceptual development and detailed design of our patented, submerged Electric Drive Units. The role will focus on the design and integration of Electric Machine elements, High Voltage electrical interfaces, thermal sub-systems, reduction gearing and drive unit housings. The role will be fast paced and dynamic, commanding high levels of autonomy and organisation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ACCOUNTABILITIES:
• Developing solutions from a blank sheet through to detailed drawings for machined, cast, and additive manufactured components, including gearbox and motor housings, cooling components, shafts, lubrication sub-systems and planetary gear assemblies using 3DX (CATIA V6).
• Requirements capture and engineering, working with high level product targets and completing the requisite activities to capture system level requirements.
• Develop and prototype rotating assemblies, bearing arrangements and couplings, working with peers to ensure dynamic structural and endurance requirements are met.
• Specification of surface finishes, treatments, and component tolerances to ensure assembly and endurance requirements are met in harsh marine environments.
• Review, optimize and improve existing drive unit designs against developing cost, weight, and efficiency targets.
• Work with electrical engineers to specify and develop interconnects and electrical interfaces to IP6K9K standards.
• Compile and author technical documentation to support test, manufacturing processes and customer information.
• Support the boat development programs where required.
• Engage in the introduction of new technology to ATL where appropriate.
• Attend team and 1-1 meetings and fulfil reporting requirements as required by Artemis Technologies.
• Ensure compliance with Artemis Technologies Policies and procedures as outlined in the Company Handbook.
• Build good working relationships across Artemis Technologies.
• Contribute to shaping a culture that reflects Artemis Technologies Values and Guiding Principles and enables the company to achieve its goals.
PERSON SPECIFICATION:
Education/Qualifications and Experience:
• University degree in Mechanical Engineering or other relevant engineering discipline such as Automotive or Aerospace (2:1 Hons or above) is essential, MEng or equivalent desirable.
• 2+ years in a marine / automotive / motorsport / aerospace setting is desired.
Key Skills Required:
Technical/Design skills:
• Proven experience in 3D design of precision engineered components, castings, and lightweight components with CATIA V5/V6, other packages will be considered.
• Proven capability to deliver functional, high-performance component & sub-assembly designs for demanding commercial applications.
• Experience working with at least one of the following is essential: Electric Powertrain, Electric Machines, Drivetrains, Rotating Machinery, high speed shaft couplings, shaft sealing systems and bearing arrangements.
• Experience with surface treatments for protecting against galvanic corrosion in salt rich environments.
• Applying a ‘first principles’ approach to solve challenging new problems, with knowledge of the use of toolsets such as gear design software, CAE & FEA packages in the development process.
• Experience with model-based design and simulation / CAE techniques desirable.
Communication skills:
• Good report writing skills – clear, concise, and well structured.
• Excellent interpersonal skills.
